For anyone visiting Trentino-Alto Adige, it’s practically impossible not to visit at least one of its wonderful lakes. At the top of the wish list is the world-famous Lake Braies. An enchanting body of water nestled among the Dolomites of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, but unfortunately almost always extremely crowded. However, there are many other lakes that are easily accessible by car or via a short walk suitable for everyone. So here are our 7 alternatives to Lake Braies that won’t disappoint you.
7 Alternatives to Lake Braies: SOUTH TYROL
1. Lake Anterselva—the northernmost lake
A beautiful little lake at the bottom of the valley of the same name, a small side valley of the Puster Valley. We’re just a few meters from the Austrian border. Here, you can walk all the way around the lake along the Nature Trail. Towered over by the peaks of the Vedrette di Ries and surrounded by green forests, it offers a truly idyllic view. We’ve already told you about it in winter: Lake Anterselva in winter.
2. Lake Dobbiaco—the closest to Braies
Not far from Braies, Lake Dobbiaco is truly a lovely place to visit with children. Here, you can rent a pedal boat, walk along the wooden boardwalks through the woods, and take a loop hike (about 1.5 hours) following the informational signs that suggest fun activities for the little ones. The Croda dei Baranci and Cima Nove are reflected in its emerald-green waters. The lake is an ideal habitat for various species of waterfowl. Swimming is not permitted in the lake. 3. Lake Carezza—the most fairy-tale-like
Perhaps one of the best-known lakes in Trentino-Alto Adige, it’s strategically located for visiting both the Val d’Ega and the Val di Fassa. Legend has it that it’s the home of the beautiful nymph Ondina, who emerges from the waters to enchant all who pass by. There really is a nymph! The statue is visible when the water level is very low. There’s convenient parking across the street, connected via an underpass directly to the lake’s shores.
