October is synonymous with chestnuts… but just how delicious are they? We’ve rounded up the must-see festivals in South Tyrol here. There are plenty of special occasions to enjoy them, buy some, or simply spend a lovely fall day with the kids in places where tradition runs deep.
The Culture of Törggelen in South Tyrol
What if we told you about Törggelen? Do you know what it is? It used to refer to farmers tasting the new wine, accompanied by a few traditional dishes. Now it’s a traditional meal or snack featuring speck, caraway bread, stuffed ravioli, canederli, country sausage with sauerkraut, barley soup, desserts, and, of course, chestnuts. Over the years, we’ve tried many farmsteads; you’ll find them described in this article, complete with updated menus and prices.
Here are the fall holidays for 2025:
Closed (September 19–21, 2025)
Chiusa, the city of artists, transforms into a sort of open-air tavern this weekend. Throughout the city’s streets, various food stands offer a variety of South Tyrolean specialties: canederli, stuffed ravioli, homemade sausages with sauerkraut, sweet Krapfen, Strauben, and roasted chestnuts. More info HERE.
Termeno (October 4–5, 2025)
