Fall is perhaps our favorite season. The leaves take on a thousand shades of gold and begin to fall to the ground, creating soft—and then crunchy—carpets at the base of the trees, which, in turn, shed their leaves to reveal glimpses of the blue sky… It’s a bit as if the world were turned upside down, and that alone makes us dream.
But then, how can you beat the magic of colorful leaves? What child doesn’t love them? Looking at the leaves, their colors, their shapes… collecting them, lining them up, making up stories… kids could spend hours doing this! Not to mention all the games you can play: hiding under the leaves, diving into them, making them “rain” from the sky…
In short, young and old alike are always enchanted by the fall foliage, an incredible natural spectacle that repeats itself every year at this time: the atmosphere in the woods becomes magical, and it’s wonderful to let yourself be swept away by the emotions. In Trentino, a region rich in forests, there are truly countless places where you can be enchanted by this phenomenon… We’d like to recommend a few of them in the areas we love most.
Foliage in Tennese and the Outer Giudicarie
Parco delle Terme – Comano
Beautiful in every season, it takes on a unique charm in the fall and is the perfect place to enjoy the fall foliage, thanks to the many different species of trees that surround it. On mild days, you can stroll along the river, play in the equipped play areas, or even try the Kneipp path. You’ll find it all at At the Comano Thermal Park.

Lake Tenno – Tenno
Not far away is Lake Tenno. Its clear depths mean that its waters—which reflect the colors of the sky and the surrounding mountains—take on a very intense turquoise hue. In the fall, the spectacle is even more breathtaking: the golden hues of the leaves create an even more magical contrast. Here you can stroll around the lake, taking advantage of the new suspension bridge, and—if the water level allows—even walk to what is usually a small island. Information Lake Tenno—what colors!
Stabio Alpine Pasture – Duron Pass
In short, this is truly a wonderful area in the fall: it’s hard to name just a few places… You can also get some inspiration from our mini-guide, “Things to Do in Comano and the Surrounding Area,” and you won’t be disappointed. We’d especially like to highlight Malga Stabio for its postcard-perfect scenery with views of Carè Alto. You can reach this mountain hut from Passo del Duron via a beautiful hike through meadows and forests decked out in their fall colors. Read Autumn Hike to Malga Stabio for a detailed account of the hike.

Foliage in Vallagarina
Lake Cei

Lake Cei is one of the most beloved and appreciated lakes in Trentino at this time of year. It is surrounded on all sides by colorful forests whose myriad hues are reflected in its waters, making it truly unique. Aside from the classic walk around the lake, the area is also ideal for longer hikes, such as the one along the CimArte trail, which leads to Malga Cimana. A Walk Around Lake Cei is our article on Lake Cei in the fall.
Mount Baldo
Another easily accessible destination that offers stunning fall colors is Monte Baldo, which is not coincidentally also known as the “Garden of Europe.” Take a walk through the beech forests and enjoy the warm rays of the sun—perhaps taking the opportunity to participate in one of the many fall festivals or to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at Baita Fos or or at the Campei Mountain Hut
Fall Foliage in Val di Fassa
San Pellegrino Pass and Fuciade—Val di Fassa
Imagine the vast meadows that characterize the Fuciade valley, with its distinctive wooden huts and the imposing peaks that surround it, all enveloped in a magical, warm atmosphere… Fall transforms every place into something precious. The walk is easy and flat, suitable for children and strollers. For more information on the route, read From Passo San Pellegrino to Fuciade. At Passo San Pellegrino, you can also take a short stroll around the small lake of the same name.
Fall Foliage in Valsugana and Val di Cembra
Serraia and Piazze Lakes – Piné Plateau

A pleasant, flat walk suitable for everyone, ideal for unwinding, breathing in the fresh air, and enjoying nature. It’s particularly picturesque in the fall, with the stunning foliage reflected in the waters of Lake Serraia and Lake Piazze. It’s also easy to navigate with a stroller. Find all the useful information in “Walks Around the Piné Lakes.”
Lake delle Prese – Valsugana
This small lake above Ronchi Valsugana is well worth a visit. The walk will allow you not only to admire the autumn colors of the trees but also to immerse yourself in a dreamlike atmosphere, thanks to the picturesque wooden cabins and the mountain peaks in the background. Perfect for a Sunday outing! Alessia tells you all about it in this article: Lago delle Prese: What a charm!
Fall Foliage in Val di Non
Lake Tovel
A trip to Lake Tovel has a unique charm in every season, but even more so in the fall! To understand what we’re talking about, you simply have to come and see it for yourself: you’ll be enchanted by the spectacular colors and the atmosphere that seems frozen in time. We’ve visited it several times—read “Tovel, the Enchanted Lake.”

San Romedio Shrine
Another wonderful fall destination is undoubtedly the Sanctuary of San Romedio, surrounded by woods and silence. Perched on a cliff, it will surprise you with its architecture, which is both romantic and bold. It can be reached via the picturesque path carved into the rock, starting from Sanzeno. Info at San Romedio: Path Through the Rock.

Fall Foliage in Primiero
The Pensive Christ – Rolle Pass
There are many great places to visit in October to see the fall foliage in the Primiero Valley. We’d like to recommend the beautiful “Cristo Pensante” hike , starting from Passo Rolle, which we experienced ourselves during this very time of year.
Colbricon Lakes – Rolle Pass
The beautiful Colbricon lakes are also highly recommended in the fall . The trail to reach them is easy and perfect for children. It winds mainly through a forest of larch and fir trees, dressed in stunning colors. As soon as you emerge from the forest, the beautiful lakes come into view. (Read Rolle Pass: to the Colbricon Lakes).

Of course, the trails that wind through Villa Welsperg, Val Canali, Valle del Mis, and Valle del Vanoi—home to the equally stunning lake Calaita Calaita
Fall Foliage in Val di Fiemme
Paneveggio Forest – Val di Fiemme
The Paneveggio Forest is located about ten kilometers from Predazzo, just before Passo Rolle. In the midst of this perfect setting for admiring the colors of autumn, you’ll also find the deer enclosure: a large area where numerous deer live in semi-freedom. Thanks to the observation points and the trail that circles the entire enclosed area, it won’t be hard to spot them—perhaps even up close. Just imagine how wonderful that would be! A lovely walk we recommend in this area is the Marciò Trail in Paneveggio.

Fall Foliage in Val dei Mocheni
Kaserbisn Hitt
A very charming spot to admire autumn in the enchanted valley is definitely the hike from Baita Van Spitz to Kaserbisn Hitt, just beyond the splendid “imperial meadows” in the municipality of Fierozzo. In addition to the colors, there are many beautiful views with the Brenta Dolomites as a backdrop.Val dei Mocheni: at Kaserbisn Hitt — here you’ll find all the information
Fall Foliage in Val di Ledro
Lake Ledro
A walk around Lake Ledro is always recommended at this time of year—a lovely, peaceful stroll with the fall colors brightening up your day. The stretch along the lake’s northern shore is lovely, but if you’re looking for an even quieter part of the Ledro Valley, head to the opposite shore, toward the woods of Ledro Land Art and the slightly retro vacation cottages in the village of Pur. For more information, see A Stroll Around Lake Ledro.
Val di Concei
Val Concei is definitely worth a walk to admire the fall foliage; there you’ll find Leder Legn’s stunning sculptures and the brand-new sensory trail that we had the chance to explore this summer (Barefoot in Val Concei: the story). You can walk the entire length of the valley starting from the village of Lenzumo and fully enjoy the tranquility and peace of these surroundings.
Equally impressive is the view surrounding the Pernici Mountain Hut, which overlooks the valley and is sheltered from behind by the peaks of Pichea.
Fall Foliage in Val di Sole
Lake Caprioli – Val di Sole
Val di Sole offers several walks at this time of year to admire the myriad hues and colors of fall. We recommend the easy walk (though you can also bike it) that leads to Lago dei Caprioli: you can also take the Sentiero degli Gnomi to admire the wooden statues and maybe even spot a deer! The little lake is an oasis of peace and tranquility, perfect for a mild October Sunday. Lago dei Caprioli and the Sentiero degli Gnomi: you’ll find all the useful information in this article.
Lake Malghette – Val di Sole
The scenery here won’t disappoint you either. You can reach Lago delle Malghette with a nice walk from either Campo Carlomagno or Malga Dimaro. Once you arrive, take the time to walk around the lake: it will take you less than an hour, and the scenery you’ll admire from every angle will remain among your fondest memories. We were there during this trip: read “High Up on the Shepherds’ Trail.”
Suspension Bridge – Val di Rabbi
The Val di Rabbi is also stunning in its fall colors, and it’s truly hard to pick one spot over another… One easy way to get a different perspective of the fall forest is to cross the famous suspension bridge over the Ragaiolo stream. Here you’ll be surrounded on all sides by a thousand shades of yellow, red, and green… The walk is easy, and kids will love the thrill of the suspension bridge hanging over the void (the railings are very high, so safety is guaranteed). Read how to get there: Suspension Bridge in Val di Rabbi
From here, you can also continue on to the trail of the monumental larch trees (just imagine the colors!).
Lake Pian Palù – Val di Pejo
Another spectacular spot to admire the fall foliage is Lake Pian Palù. The combination of its emerald waters and the surrounding larch forests makes everything even more beautiful in the fall. You can walk all the way around the lake, taking in ever-changing views. For the more “adventurous” kids, there’s the intriguing dam, located at the end of the trail (if you walk clockwise). If you’d like to stop for a bite to eat or a rest, Malga Frattasecca is just a short distance away, where the kids will go wild over the animals (piglets, llamas, donkeys, goats… read about our experience HERE ) and can play safely on the meadows. Information about Lake Pian Palù: Lake Pian Palù: turquoise water.
Fall Foliage in Val Giudicarie, Rendena, and Valle del Chiese
Val Nambrone – Campiglio
Turquoise waters and then forests of fir and larch trees: a place where colors, sounds, and natural elements awaken all five senses, even in the fall. Here’s a link to the article from our last summer visit: you can find it here: Amolacqua in Val Nambrone.
Lake Nambino – Campiglio
Among the most picturesque places to visit in the fall, we simply must mention Lake Nambino, a little gem nestled in the woods of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park. It’s easy to get there, even with a hiking stroller. Here you can admire one of the most beautiful fall views, with the mountain hut overlooking the shore and the warm autumn hues reflecting in the water. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some horses. More information: Lake Nambino: A Corner of Paradise
Val di Fumo – Valle del Chiese
Finally, we’ll wrap up this by no means exhaustive overview of autumnal wonders with the Val di Fumo, which is at its most beautiful in the fall. Here, the landscape is truly postcard-perfect—it’s no wonder the Val di Fumo is often compared to Canada, with its colorful maple leaves… The hike is easy and suitable for everyone; if you have small children, a backpack is highly recommended, as it will allow you to reach the most picturesque spots.
