In a setting where nature still reigns supreme, at an altitude of 1,800 meters, the Lavazè Pass offers a variety of summer activities for families and children. Straddling the Val di Fiemme and South Tyrol, you’ll be surrounded by the Dolomite massifs of Latemar and Catinaccio, as well as the unmistakable Corno Bianco and Corno Nero. There are spacious, free parking lots, which serve as the starting point for several hikes that are even suitable for use with trekking strollers. Here’s what you can do:
MALGA COSTA
The first trail, which is easy and offers scenic views, takes about an hour to reach the Lieg Alm (Malga Costa), a restaurant that serves excellent South Tyrolean cuisine. We’ve been there many times, in every season, and we’ve always loved the simple, authentic atmosphere, the quick service, the spectacular view, and the playground for kids in the back. You can read our story HERE.
MALGA ORA
Another hike—also just over an hour—to Malga Ora, where some friendly llamas are waiting for you. We’ve written about this hike HERE.
SPORT FISHING
If, instead of hiking, you’d rather stay near the pass, you can enjoy fishing for rainbow trout in the alpine pond—a fun activity even for young children. You can rent fishing rods, purchase bait, or use your own gear. This activity is usually open from mid-June to mid-September, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Prices: fish caught, 14 €/kg; rod rental, 2 €. It’s a real treat to enjoy freshly caught trout with a side of potatoes at the nearby Bucaneve restaurant, for 18 euros per trout (service and rod rental included; drinks not included).
RV PARKING
Campers can park for free in the Passo parking lot, or access theparking area a short distance away.
OCLINI PASS
Even if you travel just a few kilometers toward Passo Oclini, you’ll find plenty of great hiking options and fun activities. Here’s what we have to say about them:
NEW SHED
A pleasant loop hike lasting about three hours, with the option to eat at two charming mountain huts starting from the pass. There’s also a new playground right next to it, which is sure to catch the little ones’ attention right away. All the info HERE.
GURNDIN ALPINE HUT
An easy high-altitude hike that passes by two traditional mountain huts; the first can be reached in twenty minutes, and the second in another half hour. All the details HERE.
ON THE WHITE HORN
From the Passo Oclini parking lot, you can hike up to the summit of Corno Bianco (Weisshorn). It’s an easy hike with an elevation gain of about 300 meters, following a well-marked trail that starts through meadows, then winds through mountain pines, and finally leads over rocky terrain. All the details are HERE.
