Val di Rabbi: Summer with the Kids

Published on 12 June 2025 by Alessandra Prandi

A wonderful valley just waiting to be explored! So many great activities, hikes through forests, meadows, and past waterfalls, plus plenty of mountain huts serving delicious, authentic fare! The Val di Rabbi has truly captivated us with its natural beauty. We’ve explored it summer after summer, and in this article we’ve compiled a list of wonderful experiences you can enjoy with your kids.

Suspension Bridge

This bridge, which has long been a symbol of the valley, is about 100 meters long and spans 60 meters above the Ragaiolo stream. It is a structure made of cables and steel that overlooks the nearby waterfall and can be reached by taking a walk through the woods. Follow the forest road that runs alongside the Rabbies stream, then head up the trail through the woods—which isn’t suitable for strollers. It takes a bit of effort, but you’ll be surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Not recommended if you’re afraid of heights, but perfect if you’re looking for a thrill (in complete safety—there’s no danger, not even for children). Find all the details in our article On the suspension bridge in Val di Rabbi.

Saent Waterfalls

Another must-see spot in the valley is the Saènt Waterfalls, a natural wonder that can be reached with a couple-hour hike from the Colèr parking lot. Once you reach Malga Stablasolo, at an elevation of 1,536 meters, it will take you about 20 minutes to reach the first waterfall. You can also ride an e-bike up, leaving it just before the first waterfall. The second section of the trail (from the base to the top of the waterfall) is much steeper and more challenging due to the countless dips and steps, but it’s the most picturesque. Amid wooden bridges and splashes of water, you’ll be able to observe the majesty of the waterfall up close. Info: Saènt Waterfalls in Val di Rabbi

Valorz Waterfalls and the Animal Trail

A circular themed trail—not suitable for strollers—that takes you on a journey to discover several animal sculptures made from intertwined branches by local artist Maurizio Misseroni. Along the way, you’ll find a fox, an owl, a deer, a roe deer, and a bear… This brings you to the waterfalls, where you can take advantage of the tables and benches for a picnic before heading back down to the valley. You’ll find HERE the details of this hike to the The Splendid Valorz Waterfalls in Rabbi.

Kneipp Trail

The Kneipp area is always a nice change of pace when you visit Val di Rabbi or just want to spend a relaxing afternoon. A trail that winds through a well-maintained garden, among pools and streams, also holds some interesting surprises. For example, you can even take a mud bath: your day will immediately seem more fun (not permitted for children under 14). Kneipp Trail in Val di Rabbi: click for all the details.

San Bernardo Playground

Right next to the Kneipp path is a truly amazing playground—kids won’t want to leave! With giant climbing structures, water play features, and—best of all—a beautiful pond with a raft, it’s impossible to get bored. All around are spacious, well-maintained green areas and several picnic tables—perfect if you’d like to have a picnic. Find out more by reading Rabbi: A Wow Playground in San Bernardo

The Monumental Larch Trees

Twenty-three imposing and majestic larch trees are the main attraction of this one-of-a-kind educational nature trail, which begins near Malga Prà di Saent at an elevation of 1,785 meters. Here, a staircase made up of over 700 stone and root steps stretches for one and a half kilometers. The larch trees encountered along the way have distinctive shapes and have grown on rugged terrain exposed to the elements at an elevation of nearly 2,000 meters. At the end of the trail, a “dinosaur” watches over the valley… To learn more, read The Monumental Larch Trees in Val di Rabbi

The Ruatti Mill

Visiting the Ruatti Mill is a bit like stepping into the life of a 19th-century miller. It is one of the few water mills still in operation in Trentino. Here, in addition to the milling room and the waterwheels, you can visit the adjoining house-museum, where you can immerse yourself in the family’s history and the valley’s ancient traditions. During the summer, guided tours and workshops are organized by reservation. To learn more, click here: In Val di Rabbi at Molino Ruatti

The Casèl in Somrabbi

You can’t leave Val di Rabbi without visiting this small museum, which showcases what is perhaps the most authentic aspect of this little valley. Here, in addition to seeing the tools used for processing milk up close, you can discover how society as a whole was organized and revolved around this activity, which was essential to the livelihood of the people who lived here. Here’s our story: Casèl di Somrabbi: An Ancient Tradition

An e-bike ride

The landscapes of the Val di Rabbi, the unspoiled nature, the quiet roads, and the numerous trails available are also ideal for cycling enthusiasts. You can climb up to Malga Stablasolo or take a tour of the high-altitude villages, passing through Somrabbi; or you can ride along the forest road leading to Malga Fratte; or explore the ancient Venetian sawmills; or head to Malga Monte Sole… We’re sure you’ll find the perfect route for your family. And if you don’t have a bike with you, there are plenty of rental options here. Curious to see where we’ve been? Check out Val di Rabbi by e-bike

The Park Game

This recreational and educational area features displays and activities designed to help visitors learn about the materials that have been most important to the valley’s development and way of life: iron, air, stone, wood, and water. Players take on the roles of animals that live in the Stelvio National Park, such as deer, marmots, eagles, and humans. By using their imagination and the information gathered from fact sheets and bulletin boards, they’ll have fun while learning to observe and understand important aspects of this beautiful protected natural area. HERE is the story of our experience.

Stablasolo Alpine Pasture

This mountain hut, located at the end of the Val di Rabbi, just a short walk from the Saènt waterfalls, can be reached by a simple 45-minute hike—even with a hiking stroller—or by e-bike. We always recommend stopping every now and then along the way up to turn around and admire the many views this valley has to offer. At Malga Stablasolo, you’ll find excellent food and fresh dairy products. From here, you can continue on to the Dorigoni Mountain Hut, the Saènt Waterfalls, and the Trail of the Monumental Larch Trees. More info at Malga Stablasolo in Val di Rabbi.

Polinar Alpine Hut

Perhaps less well-known than the other mountain huts in the valley, this little corner of paradise can be reached via a pleasant hike of less than two hours. Surrounded by nature, children can pet the animals here and learn to find joy in the simple things. Michele and Nicoletta’s menu features only fresh, local ingredients and wild herbs. It’s definitely worth a try. Check out our article At Malga Polinar in Val di Rabbi.

Fratte Alpine Hut

Peace and quiet, excellent local cuisine, and the tinkling of cowbells. You can get here on foot (even by crossing the suspension bridge) or by shuttle. You can dine in the beautiful dining room with natural wood finishes and large windows, enjoying the surrounding nature even on less sunny days. We went there by e-bike: read From the Tibetan Bridge to Malga Fratte

Malga Maleda Alta

A simple mountain hut surrounded by pastures, it can be reached on foot from the valley or, during the height of summer, via a convenient shuttle service. From the shuttle’s final stop, however, it’s still a 45-minute walk: a charming, steadily ascending path that winds through streams, flowers, and small waterfalls (not suitable for strollers). Along the way, you’ll also encounter Highland cattle, with their long horns and thick, woolly coats. You can also stay overnight: the rooms with views of the valley are absolutely charming. Monte Sole Alpine Hut

Open year-round, this mountain hut is nicknamed “the hut just a step from the sky.” Nestled in the lush greenery of the Cercen Valley, it offers excellent food and desserts and serves as a starting point for other interesting hikes for those seeking a vacation in touch with nature. You can get there on foot or by e-bike—if you want to cut the travel time in half! Overnight stays are also available. We stopped by very recently to meet Simone, the new manager.
