Winter at the Gallo Rosso Farmhouses

Published on 5 December 2023 by Elisa

When snow covers the meadows and surrounding woods, it’s winter at the Gallo Rosso farmsteads! The cold season brings peace and tranquility, and the properties participating in this project offer their guests a wonderful retreat in a fairy-tale landscape. Staying at one of these farm stays means spending quality time with your family—playing, having fun, and creating unforgettable experiences and memories. Let’s discover these places together!

The farmsteads offer breathtaking views; they are warm and welcoming, furnished in the South Tyrolean style: wooden floors, soft pillows, and many other comforts. In addition, during your vacation, you can spend time with the farming families, who will introduce you to their customs and traditions. You can also take part in daily activities in the barn or in the kitchen, preparing some traditional dishes together. The farmwomen experiment with new recipes alongside their guests or teach them how to make traditional South Tyrolean dishes, such as soups, strudel, or the famous canederli.

Here, each day begins in a special way: in the morning, if requested, a breakfast basket is delivered to your apartment, filled with healthy, fresh, and wholesome farm products (milk, eggs, speck, yogurt, fruit) and treats prepared by the owners, such as cakes, bread, syrups, and jams.

SLOW WINTER

Gallo Rosso promotes a “slow vacation,” an alternative to the traditional ski vacation, during which people often don’t truly relax because of the lines at the ski lifts, the crowds on the slopes, traffic on the roads, and full parking lots.

Here you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in fresh snow right outside your front door and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities without the hassle of driving. All you have to do is enjoy the magic of winter and take in the beauty of nature while discovering enchanting places. You can go on snowshoe hikes suitable for everyone or try horse-drawn sleigh rides—an experience offered, for example, by the Altmessnerhof farm in Dobbiaco—to admire the snow-covered landscape from the comfort of this unique vehicle.

At the end of a busy day, a nice hot bath for the kids and something warm to warm up the body—prepared by the farmers—is just what you need: a cup of coffee, mulled wine, tea, or a good herbal tea made with dried herbs from the farm, which is both beneficial and delicious. The Gallo Rosso Pflegerhof farm in Castelrotto prepares various herbal blends, herbal teas, and other products such as seasonings, spice blends, cosmetics, and syrups—all made with ingredients grown on the farm.

Or a nice plate of steaming canederli enjoyed in the farmhouse’s cozy apartment is the perfect finishing touch to your vacation, along with a hearty slice of strudel or a delicious Kaiserschmarrn, the traditional sweet, shredded omelet served with cranberry jam.

WELL-BEING AND RELAXATION

Many farmsteads offer the chance to enjoy a rejuvenating sauna in their small on-site spa, while you let yourself be mesmerized by the rhythmic fall of snowflakes visible through the large window overlooking the outdoors. You can also choose to try some wellness treatments rooted in Alpine tradition: hay baths, wool baths, and massages with natural products that reduce stress and rejuvenate both body and mind. One option to consider is the Lochbauer in Meltina.
