Tenno, a small village overlooking Lake Garda, owes much of its fame to its stunning turquoise lake. But did you know there are so many other wonderful things to do and see around this magical body of water? Today, we’ll take you on a journey to discover some lesser-known but equally charming and interesting spots. Ready to find out what to do with kids in Tenno? Let’s go!
Lake Tenno
Let’s start with the lake: a small alpine body of turquoise water with a tiny island in the center. It’s a swimming lake, accessible via two long flights of stairs—so unfortunately not stroller-friendly. As you descend the steps through the tree canopy, the turquoise waters gradually come into view: a color that takes your breath away. The beaches are tiny, but if you’re willing to make do, it’s lovely to spend an entire day here. In addition to the bars and restaurants near the parking lots, there’s a kiosk right by the lake. The walk around the lake can be enjoyed in all seasons and is particularly beautiful in the fall, with the yellow and red leaves. It takes about 30–40 minutes to complete the loop. A few months ago, a steel suspension bridge was opened on the north shore, making it easier to cross. For more information , read “Lake Tenno: What Colors!”

San Pietro Mountain Hut
Accessible on foot from the lake or via several shorter trails (the nearest parking lot is just a 15-minute walk away), San Pietro is a little world with a long history. Once you pass through the ancient gate, you’ll be greeted by a small mountain church and the traditional white and blue shutters typical of mountain huts. There’s a large lawn for relaxing and a playground for children. The real highlight, however, is the truly breathtaking view of the Upper Garda region and the lake. You can enjoy it to the fullest while savoring one of the local dishes seated on the outdoor terrace, or even from the rooms on the upper floor. Colle Grom and Col Bussé
Two lovely, short scenic walks that start near Tenno Castle (which is not open to the public as it is a private residence)—perfect for wrapping up a day in this area or pairing with a nice lunch at one of the many small, rustic eateries nearby. The little church of San Lorenzo , located just beyond the quaint village of Frapporta at the foot of the castle , is also lovely. Read here about Colle Grom and Col Bussè: what a view!

Donkey Trekking at Ballino
Heading back north, at Le Vie degli Asini, at the Ballino Pass (a 5-minute drive from Lake Tenno), children can get up close and personal with farm animals, including the gentle donkeys—which they can brush and cuddle before going for a ride and discovering little-known yet incredible spots alongside these adorable companions. The farm also offers other activities, all designed to help children become more aware of their feelings and develop the ability to express their emotions. Read “Trekking with Donkeys at Ballino.”

Camerona Cave at Ballino
If you hike up behind the little church in Ballino (the trail is not suitable for strollers due to exposed roots), in just a few minutes you’ll reach a cave of majestic proportions: a place where time seems to have stood still tens of thousands of years ago. Go there to experience this truly unique sensation for yourself! Find more information in our article At Ballino in the Camerona Cave
Grassi Alpine Hut
If you head down from Lake Tenno toward the village of Pranzo (small but very charming), at a certain point you’ll come to the fork leading to Campi. Take this road and follow it past the village of Campi. From here, you’ll reach the fascinating archaeological site of San Martino, nestled among the chestnut groves, and then Malga Grassi, one of the locals’ favorite spots for a hearty meal of polenta! You can take a stroll around the mountain hut, and for those who feel like hiking, you can also head up to the Pernici Mountain Hut (or do it the other way around: descend to Malga Grassi from Val Concei). We’ll take you there soon!
With Kids in Tenno: The Village of Canale
A beautiful medieval village that has been largely restored while preserving its original charm. You can stroll through the cobblestone alleys and past houses with ears of corn hanging out to dry, in an atmosphere that truly feels like another era. The village is part of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” circuit and is home to the Casa Artisti, which often collaborates with the MAG Museo Alto Garda. In the summer, don’t miss the Rustico Medioevo and its historical reenactments, and in winter, the magical Christmasmarkets. Just a short distance away is the village of Calvola, another little gem with a panoramic view of Lake Garda.
